My thoughts on selling yourself…

Something I’ve heard multiple times in the last week is people saying they don’t know how to “sell themselves” – either in their CVs or in interview.

For many people, the thought of having to “sell themselves” sends shivers up their spines. Do you know why? It’s because they feel they are not able to be genuine and themselves.

When I write a CV for someone, I always work on presenting an honest (yet strategic!) overview of their experience and qualifications, focusing on the most relevant elements for the job in question. It’s really important for people to feel their CV honestly and authentically represents them, so they don’t feel like a fraud in the interview.

Similarly in interview – don’t think about selling yourself. Focus on discussing your experience, skills and qualifications in a genuine, authentic and clear way that is relevant for the job. What is the alternative…saying “I’m really really great – you should really hire me now” !!!???

Don’t focus on selling yourself, focus on being genuine, building connections with people, and being strategic in thinking about what you can draw on from your background that shows you are a great fit for the role.

Sold.
