After reviewing 76 (!) video interviews on behalf of a higher education institute this month here are some of my top tips:
1) Predict, Prepare, Practice. Predict the interview questions, prepare what to say and practice saying it. Ideally, the first time you answer a question won’t be in an actual interview.
2) Try not to sound like a robot. This happens a lot especially when people are nervous. The problem is that it’s really difficult to listen and focus on and you don’t come across as motivated, enthusiastic or interested in the position.
3) For competency questions, learn the STAR format. Write down beforehand what behaviour reflects excellence at that competency and work that into your answer, showing how you INDIVIDUALLY demonstrated these skills.
4) If you lose your train of thought, or go blank have a go to – like “I just need a moment to gather my thoughts”. You will come across as much more confident and in control that just panicking! Also, humour is a great tool in this situation (and generally showing some personality during the interview is amazing – this is the main reason recruiters interview after all!)
5) Check your set up in advance – is your microphone picking up sound clearly enough, is there enough light in the room & neutral background
