I didn’t used to see the value in emailing an interviewer after an interview. I didn’t think it was standard outside of the US, and thought it might be interpreted as pushy or annoying.
However, I have a new perspective. I have reviewed 165 and counting (!) mock video interviews on behalf of a higher education institute in Ireland. Approximately 5% of students reply thanking me for my feedback.
This is not necessary, and I don’t expect them to, but when I receive a thank you message the following happens:
1) I re-read their feedback email and am reminded of them
2) I feel appreciated
3) I think of them as someone who is polite and made me feel good
All good outcomes in my opinion!
So, from now on, any interviews I have in the future – the interviewer will be receiving a thank you message from me that evening.
